Abstract

It was found for the first time that a phase grating was formed with variations in thickness and refractive index with a period of half the wavelength of surface acoustic waves, when a thin film was deposited on a substrate in which a standing surface wave was excited. No such phenomenon has been reported before, and its application to optical elements is expected to be a new application of surface acoustic waves.
