Abstract

This study presents Mn and Fe co-doped NaYF4:Yb/Er upconversion nanoparticles for potential biomedical applications. Solvothermally prepared nanoparticles were rendered hydrophilic through acidic surface treatment. Hydrophilic nanoparticles were immobilized on SiO2 particles. Effect of co-doping on optical and magnetic properties was studied through photoluminescence spectra and magnetic characterization. Higher Mn/Fe mole ratio improved red emission intensity in NaYF4:Yb/Er upconversion nanoparticles whereas lower Mn/Fe mole ratio improved paramagnetic properties. Co-doping with Mn and Fe is a useful way to tune properties of NaYF4:Yb/Er upconversion nanoparticles as bioimaging and T1 MRI contrast agents.
