Abstract

Ramp-edge Josephson junctions using LnBCO (Ln = Yb, Y and Sm) superconductors and a SrSnO 3 (SSO) insulator were successfully fabricated. La-doped YbBCO and YBCO superconductors, i.e. La-YbBCO and La-YBCO, were used for counter and base-electrodes, respectively. Junctions were formed on a SmBCO ground plane (GP). The layer sequence was La-YbBCO/SSO/La-YBCO/SSO/SmBCO//MgO substrate. The lower four layers, in which flat surfaces were required, were deposited by an off-axis magnetron sputtering method. La-YbBCO was deposited by a pulsed laser deposition method. Thin La-YBCO and BaZrO 3 double-buffer layer was inserted between the SmBCO ground plane and MgO substrates. Purely c-axis-oriented SmBCO films with average surface roughness less than 1 nm within 10 μm 2-area were obtained. Josephson junctions on the GP exhibited resistively shunted-junction-type current–voltage characteristics. The sheet inductance values below 50 K for the base- and counter-electrodes were estimated to be 0.83 and 0.67 pH/sheet, respectively, being lower than the values previously recorded for the electrodes prepared on La-YBCO GP.
