Abstract

Record short wavelength F2 laser light was applied for the first time to rapidly form strong (>20 dB) long-period gratings in hydrogen-free and hydrogen-loaded telecommunication fiber. In hydrogen-loaded fiber, 157-nm grating formation was 250-fold faster than with 248-nm KrF laser radiation. © 2001 Optical Society of America OCIS codes: (060.2340) Fiber optics components; (140.2180) Excimer lasers
