Abstract

In this communication, zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles using zinc acetate as precursor, potassium hydroxide as reducing agent and natural polysaccharide (gum acacia) as capping agent is prepared to photocatalytically degrade methyl green textile dye. Surface modification of ZnO nanoparticles with gum acacia leads to change in morphology coupled with reduction in size from 31 to 16 nm. Gum acacia capped ZnO nanoparticles as photocatalyst shows greater efficiency (95%) of degrading methyl green than the bare ZnO nanoparticles (90%). Therefore, gum acacia capped zinc oxide nanoparticles could be used to treat various dye effluents from textile industries.
