Abstract

TiC reinforced composite coatings were fabricated by the non-vacuum electron beam cladding of Cr3C2-TiC powder mixture on the steel surface. The structure of coatings consisted mainly of γ-Fe dendrites and eutectics. The dissolution of Cr3C2 in the melted binder metal led to precipitation of Cr7C3, Cr23C6, (Cr, Fe)C carbides in the eutectic during electron beam exposure. The results showed that the value of beam power density influences on an arrangement of TiC particles in the cladded layers. TiC particles were found to be crystallization centers at the power density of 8.8 kJ/cm2. The microhardness values of coatings were found to correlate with the volume fraction of the eutectic phase, chromium and titanium content in the coatings.
