Abstract

Optical waveguides in LiF crystals by high energy He<sup>+</sup> ion-beam irradiation have been obtained. F<sub>2</sub> and F<sub>3</sub><sup>+</sup> produced color centers increase refractive index of LiF crystals, allowing the formation of waveguides, and show strong photoluminescence activity in the green-red optical band. Details of the fabrication process and preliminary characterization data are reported.
