Abstract
Cross linking polymerization has gained immense scientific interest to improve the performance of bio-blend film. Virgin sago starch film and its bio-blend with 2-Hydroxyethylmethacrylate (HEMA) monomer were prepared by casting method varying concentration of sago starch (100 to 93 %) and HEMA (0 to 7 %). Gamma irradiation was applied on to film to induce photo-crosslinking. Mechanical properties such as tensile strength (TS), tensile modulus (TM) and elongation at break (Eb%) were studied for both treated and untreated films. Monomer concentration and irradiation dose were optimized in terms of grafting/cross-linking and mechanical properties. The highest TS, TM and Eb% were found to be 27.15 MPa, 302.67 MPa and 7.78 % respectively, for the untreated film prepared with 97 % sago starch and 3 % HEMA solution. Exposure to gamma radiation increased TS, TM and Eb% of the films up to a certain limit. The highest TS, TM and Eb% of the film were found 39.65 MPa, 645.33 MPa and 9.75 %, respectively, for the film containing 97 % sago starch and 3 % HEMA at 500 krad dose. Water uptake and weight loss of the films in weather testing machine were also investigated. Thermo mechanical analysis (TMA) indicated that the treated films showed the higher glass point over the untreated one.
