Abstract

A multilayer coating of hafnium carbide and titanium carbide was fabricated on SiC-coated carbon/carbon(C/C) composite using a vacuum plasma spraying (VPS) system. The microstructure, composition, adhesion strength and ablation performance of the HfC/TiC multilayer coating were analyzed. Cracks and delamination were not observed at the interfaces. Moreover, oxidized layers or impurities were not observed in the coated layer. The adhesive strength was superior to the HfC single layer coating. After the ablation experiment, based on the mass removal rate, surface temperature, microstructure, and compositional analysis, it was confirmed that the HfC/TiC multilayer coating can effectively protect the carbon composite material.
