Abstract
In plants, the F3h gene encodes a key enzyme of the flavonoid biosynthesis pathway, i.e., flavanone 3-hydroxylase. The majority of plant species carry a single copy of this gene, whereas four copies were found in the genome of bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L., 2n = 6x = 42, BBAADD genome). Using RT-PCR, the transcription of F3h gene copies was studied in different organs of several wheat genotypes. Three homoeologous gene copies (F3h-A1, F3h-B1, and F3h-D1) manifested similar expression patterns and were specifically transcribed in caryopsis pericarp, culm, coleoptile, and leaf colored with anthocyanins. The paralogous copy F3h-B2 in the B-genome was only expressed in roots of wheat, and is probably involved in the biosynthesis of some uncolored flavonoid compounds unrelated to anthocyanin biosynthesis.
