Abstract

Striatal presynaptic dopamine synthesis capacity, as measured by 18fluoro-levo-dihydroxyphenylalanine positron emission tomography (18F-DOPA-PET), is increased in patients with schizophrenia, and has been suggested to be associated with psychosis. However, the majority of 18F-DOPA-PET studies in schizophrenia did not report or find such an association. Furthermore, striatal dopamine synthesis capacity is already increased in first-degree relatives of patients with schizophrenia and persons at high clinical risk of developing psychosis. Therefore, it is unclear whether presynaptic striatal dopamine synthesis capacity is increased only during psychosis in schizophrenia or also during psychotic remission.
