Abstract

Abstract Referring to a managerial technique, like Business Process Re-engineering or Total Quality Management, as a fad or a fashion is not meant to diminish its significance or to question its effectiveness. It is meant to describe the way that such practices become disseminated and adopted by different organizations, different sec- tors, and different countries. In this, they share many of the features of fashions in clothes, foods, or holiday destinations—a rapid rise in popularity, followed by a rapid decline as they get superseded by later fads. Occasionally a particular technique may get rediscovered or it may assume a safe if unspectacular positioning in the repertoire of management practices.
