Abstract

Abstract The Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) is the largest correctional system in the United States, with more than 200,000 inmates. The BOP transformed from a relatively small federal agency to one of the largest components of the Department of Justice in the period between 1990 and 2010. This entry describes the growth of the BOP and possible future directions. The rapid population expansion caused by the War on Drugs and determinate sentencing peaked in 2013, and the BOP entered the uncharted waters of population contraction in 2014.
