Abstract

Although F.C. Meuschen's name was well known to zoologists during his lifetime and later was quite often referred to in zoological papers, especially those dealing with zoological nomenclature, surprisingly little is known about him. In a modern work like that by Dance (1986: 53) he was described as Dutch dealer Friedrich Christian while Engel (1986: 182) characterized him as councillor and secret secretary of the legacy [legation] at 's Gravenhage. Merchant in shells. Contemporary authors are more flattering: Pallas (1772: 14) called him Clarissimo viro Meuschen, Physiophilo Hagano plurimis titulis eximio, and Slabber (17691778) who dedicated the sixteenth part of his Natuurkundige Verlustigingen to him, gave his title as Legationsraad van de doorluchtige Hertoge van SaxenHildburghausen en Coburg-Saalfeldt (Councillor of the Legation of the illustrious Duke of Saxe-Hildburghausen and Coburg-Saalfeldt) and cited Meuschen's membership of numerous scientific societies, many in Germany, and the Netherlands, but also of the Royal Society of London.
