Abstract

When a jury of distinguished American writers voted in 1949 that the Library of Congress should give a poetry award to controversial Ezra Pound, a storm broke over the issue of freedom of action. The author reviews the roles of 20 periodicals, notably the “anti” Saturday Review and “pro” Poetry.
