Abstract

A study of 440 Friesian cross-bred sons of 34 Hereford bulls showed (a) that the incidence of infectious bovine kerato-conjunctivitis (IBKC) was lower among calves with fully pigmented eyes (6·2%) than among those with less than total pigmentation (10·8%) and (b) that eye pigmentation possessed a heritability of 0·30 ± 0·04. It was concluded that the selection of fully pigmented Hereford sires might be helpful in the control of IBKC.
