Abstract
Aims/Purpose: Vision loss in elderly people may affect physical and mental health and speed up cognitive decline. Identifying visual dysfunction and staff education may improve ophthalmic care in nursing homes, but it is not yet known which practices have been implemented in Belgium.Methods: Prospective cross‐sectional survey performed in Belgium between December 2022 and January 2023, by email and hardcopy. Survey questions were based on the literature, were focused on monitoring practices, staff knowledge, and other aspects shown to affect residents' vision care. Descriptive statistics and Chi‐Square analysis were used for data analysis.Results: A total of 46 staff members (31 women, 15 men) of three Belgium nursing home staff were interviewed. The questionnaire revealed that there was not enough access to screening tools to identify vision impairments.Conclusions: Access to monitoring procedures or screening tools are not commonly available staff education in Belgium nursing homes may be insufficient.Keywords: Staff education, staff knowledge, nursing home, ophthalmic screening.
