Abstract

A DISPLAY SYSTEM CONTROLLED by the eye movements of the reader was used to identify the area in a text from which information is collected during a fixation in silent reading. As the validity of the measurements depends heavily upon the resemblance of the experimental situation to the normal reading of printed text, great care was taken to simulate a normal reading situation. Analysis of the results yielded a perceptual span of 25 to 31 character positions, or 12 to 15 positions to the right and left of the fixation point, equalling 4 to 5 degrees of visual angle. These values are in agreement with those reported from previous experiments using a different language, different subjects, and slightly different measurement techniques.
