Abstract

WE have previously shown the presence and the distribution of free nucleotides in bovine lenses after separation of the acid-soluble extract by anion exchange chromatography1,2. The peculiar anatomic structure of the lens allowed us to examine the concentrations of free nucleotides in different parts of the lens which represent cell groups of different age3. In this work we will deal with the distribution of the free nucleotides in different species of vertebrates, mammals, birds and fish—ox, sheep, pig, rabbit, rat, pigeon, chicken, and trout. This should determine whether the distribution is organ-specific or species-specific.
