Abstract

I t is known that large and small gust accelerations encountered in flights at essentially constant airspeed are distributed according to exponential laws. Hence, extreme accelerations, gust velocities and maximum airspeeds observed under certain conditions may be analyzed by the asymptotic theory of extreme values. To this end, a short resume of this theory, graphical procedures for its use and for the control curves are given in the first paragraph. In paragraphs 2 and 3 it is shown that extreme winds, maximum airspeeds, and extreme gust accelerations follow this distribution. Finally, the theory is applied to largest, smallest, and extreme accelerations.
