Abstract

Gastrointestinal stromal tumours (GISTs) are mesenchymal tumours usually located in the stomach. They rarely occur in the colon and rectum. These tumours originate from the cells of Cajal and may reach a considerable size before symptoms become obvious. Preoperative diagnosis is difficult to establish, and only a detailed histopathological analysis of the excised tumour will reveal the nature of the disease. We present a case of an elderly male patient with the extraluminal location of a large gastrointestinal stromal tumour at the splenic flexure of the colon which was accidentally discovered at a routine CT examination of the abdomen after a fall on the ground. The literature on this rare modality is briefly reviewed.
