Abstract

The timber, bark, root bark, roots, leaves, and seeds of Khaya senegalensis have been extracted with light petroleum. The known compounds 7-deacetoxy-7-oxokhivorin, khayasin, khivorin, methyl angolensate, mexicanolide, and 7-deacetoxy-7-oxogedunin have been isolated, together with a number of new compounds. Among these we have identified methyl 6-hydroxyangolensate and its acetate, the benzoate and tiglate esters corresponding to khayasin, 6-deoxydestigloylswietenine and its acetate, and 12β-hydroxy-6-deoxydestigloylswietenine diacetate. Another, methyl senegalensate, has been characterised but not identified.A system of nomenclature for derivatives of khayasin is proposed, based on a nucleus for which we propose the name methyl meliacate.
