Abstract

Abstract A sensitive method is described for the determination of microamounts of iron by means of its reaction at pH = 5.0 with 3-(4-phenyl-2-pyridinyl)-5-phenyl-1,2,4-triazine (PPT) and picrate (2,4,6-trinitro-phenol) and extraction into 1,2-dichloroethane. The apparent molar absorptivity, of the 1:3:2 iron (II)3 PPT-picrate extracted into DCE (Vaq/Vorg = 20), is 7.7 × 105lmol−1 cm−1 at 570 nm. The proposed method was applied to the determination of iron in various types of samples. The method may be made more sensitive and selective by employing a derivative spectrophotometric technique.
