Abstract

Summary Three new quinoline derivatives were synthesised and characterized. These compounds were found to be insoluble in water and different acids such as HNO3, HCl until 6 M and soluble in NaOH at 2 M concentration. Chloroform was found to be the suitable solvent for quinoline derivatives. The extraction of Ag from nitric acid by 8-methyl-2,4-dithiol-quinoline (1H) (MDTQ), 4-chloro-8-methyl-quinoline (1H) thione (CMTQ) and 3-formyl-4-hydroxy N-methyl 2(H) quinoline (FHMQ) has been investigated. The effects of shaking time, nitric acid concentration, metal ion concentration and the concentration of extractant were studied. The results showed that the distribution ratio of Ag decreased with increase in the nitric acid and metal concentration, and increased by increasing the extractant concentration. It was found that an equilibrium time of 10 min was required to reach equilibrium. The results showed that (MDTQ) is very selective for the separation of Ag.
