Abstract

Extraction studies using a pilot scale continuous countercurrent diffuser were conducted using ensiled sweet sorghum {Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench var. Rio). The effects of liquid-solid (L/S) ratio and temperature on sugar and organic acid recovery are reported. Decreasing the L/S ratio increased solute concentration in the extract. Extractions at 50C and 70C had no effect on differential extraction of sugars and organic acids. The experimental diffuser operated at unsteady state, but greater than 90% of the components of the sweet sorghum ensilage were extracted.
