Abstract

An experimental system is developed that extracts phase noise of microwave and millimetre-wave signals in the frequency domain at Fourier frequencies from 5 MHz to 40 GHz, using a phase-locked loop and deconvolution technique. The model of the measurement system and expressions of system sensitivity are described, followed by details of the hardware and software used to implement the system. System error caused by the phase-locked loop is removed efficiently by using a deconvolution technique. Representative results from an experimental system, their mutual comparison and comparison with that of the HP3047A are given, which show that it has good measurement sensitivity.
