Abstract

A general transfer matrix approach to extracting bound-state masses from lattice field theory is presented. Applications are made to SU(2) and SU(3) pure gauge theories. Employing a source of variable strength in the Monte Carlo simulation provides an efficient technique. The lowest mass glueball is found to have a mass of 1.0 ± 0.3 GeV, consistent with other evaluations.
