Abstract

The method that extracted methylnaphthalene from C10 aromatics with sidetrack distillation and continuous crystallisation was proposed. Sidetrack distillation experiment of extracting methylnaphthalene from C10 aromatics was simulated by advanced system for process engineering (Aspen Plus). Sidetrack outlet plate, sidetrack outlet rate, reflux ratio, inlet plate and theoretical plate number were investigated. Then, the simulation results were checked by experiment at the optimised simulation process conditions. The experimental apparatus was built, and the results showed that the amount of 1-methylnaphthalene and 2-methylnaphthalene reached 27·38 and 49·46 wt-%, and the yield of them was 76·63% and 73·90%, respectively. After then, continuous crystallisation experiment was set up. The optimal results showed that when the crystallisation temperature was −12°C, crystallisation time was 3 hours, filter time was 20 minutes, the purity and yield of 2-methylnaphthalene were 96·29 and 86·45 wt-%, respectively. Therefore, the 2-methylnaphthalene can be extracted from C10 aromatics with high purity and yield.
