Abstract
Extracellular levels of serotonin (5-HT) and 5-hydroxyindolacetic acid (5-HIAA) were measured in the medial pontine reticular formation of acute decerebrate cats. The mean basal levels of 5-HT and 5-HIAA were 26 fmol 20 μ l and 15 pmol 20 μ l . Perfusion of the dialysis probe with high K + and Ca 2+-free Ringer solution for 60 min resulted in 4.8–8.5 × increase and 25–48% decrease in the extracellular levels of 5-HT, respectively, in comparison to the basal 5-HT levels. Perfusion with TTX-added Ringer solution for 60 min resulted in a consistent decrease in the extracellular levels of 5-HT.
