Abstract
Documental study aimed to record the phenomenon of extinction of an intermediate psychiatric service, the factors that determined it and the major repercussions for the local mental health care service. Regulations from the Ministry of Health in the records of the State Health Department and the Project of Extension named Live a life without walls were reviewed. A research was carried out in Scielo and Lilacs online databases of mental health study and day-hospital, between June and July 2010. To support the interpretation of data, we used the theoretical framework of Hinds, Chaves and Cypress, set up a contextual analysis, structured in four sub-themes related to the four levels of layers, which are: The extinction of the HD (immediate context), The HD and the local attention to the mental health reality of (specific context); Values and beliefs attributed to the intermediate services (general context) and Politics linked to the HD and the intermediate services in Brazil (meta context).The study allowed to reflect on the extinction of a psychiatric day-hospital, its repercussions for the local health care services and the challenges for the execution of the process of Psychiatric Reform among Brazilian municipalities.
