Abstract

Recent magnetic surveys in the Tasman Sea suggest the Dampier Ridge to be an extinct or dormant mid-ocean ridge. The concept of ancient sea-floor spreading activity provides an attractive explanation of the structural evolution of the South West Pacific. The concept may also explain the anomalous position of island arcs and trenches in the Western Pacific.
