Abstract
: The driving interest in the externally fired combined cycle (EFCC) and its major component, the externally fired gas turbine (EFGT), has been the hoped-for capability to use lower grade fuels such as coal, lignite, heavy oils, etc. A potential application for the EFCC may be for smaller-scale power plants (< 250 MW) where technologies such as the integrated gasification combined cycle may not be cost-competitive. While the interest in coal as a fuel continues, considerable effort is now being spent on biomass-fired EFGTs for combined heat and power (CHP) applications.
