Abstract

<h2>Summary</h2> External small intestinal fistulas, whether or not requiring surgery for their ultimate closure, require optimal care. This consists of diligent and judicious supportive management, with particular attention to early and adequate drainage for the control of sepsis, replacement of fluids and electrolytes, and the nutritional requirements needed to bring about healing of the fistulas, anastomoses, and operative wounds.
