Abstract
The influence of external organizations on physician assistant (PA) education has been critical to the success of the PA profession, as reflected by the capacity of PAs to provide accessible, quality, and cost-effective medical services. The foundation principles established by forward-thinking educators involved in the inception and early development of PA education continue to stand the test of time and contribute heavily to this ongoing success. The influence of organized medicine, other health professions, the federal government, the American Academy of Physician Assistants, and the Physician Assistant Foundation on PA education and practice is explored in light of the development and application of these principles. Their importance to the delivery of PA education today cannot be overstated and they are particularly relevant at this juncture in the effort to retain both the art and science of medical practice and in the evolution of PA educational programs, the Physician Assistant Education Association, and the PA profession.
