Abstract

For a three-month period from June to September 1988, the Canadian Forces (CF) provided two C–130 Hercules aircraft in support of the famine relief operations in Ethiopia of the Office of the United Nations Disaster Relief Coordinator (UNDRO). This chapter examines the experience of the CF as an example of the use of outside military presence as part of the responses by the international community to a humanitarian crisis in an area of civil conflict.
