Abstract

This research describes the installation of external lightning protection system using Single Pole and Free Standing Mast (FSM) to protect the installation at Pulp and Paper Industry such as Truck Scale, Evaporator, Water Treatment Plant and Oil Tank. Extended Mast Terminal (EMT) and Conventional rod air terminal are installed at the Recovery Boiler, Chemical and Kiln locations to protect surrounding structures from lightning strikes where lightning has the ability to damage and destroy objects on the ground through direct strikes on the object. From the data before the installation of external LPS (Lightning Protection System) has found that frequently interference to the area of Chemical and Oil Tank, this is characterized by frequent disruption of production and electric motors due to direct lightning strikes on the structure.Reliable lightning protection system in Pulp and Paper Industry has designed with lightning protection system consist of air terminal Early Streamer Emission (ESE), Double Shielded Down Conductor (DSDC), cables with low inductance on the conductor and grounding foundation so that the voltage on the system becomes very low when there is a strike on this lightning protection system. To know the number of lightning strikes on this external lightning protection system and the value of peak current, it used a panel equipped by Lightning Event Counter (LEC) and magnetic tape (APM). This data is also used for disruption analysis and maintenance of external lightning protection system that has been installed. [1]Installation of the grounding system for the structures of the Evaporator, Recovery Boiler, Truck Scale, Oil Tank, Water Treatment Plant in the Pulp and Paper Industry using grounding foundations that will drain the lightning current to the lower part of the resistance when there is a lightning strike on the external protection system. The data obtained after the installation of external LPS that there is not the occurrence of interference from 2017-2018 and marked by there has strike on air terminal that recorded from the rising counter and the measurement of the peak lightning current value of magnetic tape (APM) at the Recovery Boiler.
