Abstract

This article is aimed at all health care professionals, in hospital and community settings, involved in the care of patients with an external fixator. Its aim is to increase the awareness of health care professionals on the uses of external fixation and the implications for the care of patients undergoing treatment, to assist them to provide a high quality of care. The information is relevant to children and adults who have an external fixator applied to either the upper or lower limb, for the treatment of a fracture or for corrective surgery due to congenital or acquired conditions. The first part of the article, in the previous issue, reviewed the background to the development of external fixation. It provided evidenced-based advice and information on preoperative and operative care. The second part of the article covers postoperative and outpatient aspects of care.
