Abstract

The operation of an external cavity CO 2 pumped InSb spin-flip Raman laser is described. The much lower thresholds observed in external cavity operation combined with the considerably enhanced radiation densities produced by the confinement have enabled us to observe third Stokes and second anti-Stokes outputs for the first time. We have also observed spontaneous mode-locking of the Stokes output which may have significance for the generation of ultra-short mid-infrared pulses.
