Abstract

With the end of the cold war, economic activities in the world have increasingly become globalized; market economic systems have been enlarged and integrated; new promising markets have emerged; the manufacturing industry has rapidly shifted production bases abroad. In the age of megacompetion in which we have entered, it is a matter of extreme importance for us to bring up "global engineers" who dutifully lead and conduct the international operation of business from engineering perspectives. We have made a study of the abilities and skills required of such "global engineers", moves in the industrial world and the expectation we have of universities. Also a comparison has been made of these points between Japan and the U.S.A. This paper was presented in the joint conference on "Engineering Education" held on May 17, 1996.
