Abstract

J.O., male, aged 48 years, ship's steward for 25 years, was admitted to hospital complaining of tiredness and shortness of breath for four months. There was a past history of subacute rheumatism, when aged 24 years, at which time he appears to have had a rheumatic carditis. Discharged from hospital symptom free, and apparently without any clinical signs, patient remained symptom free until four months prior to admission to hospital in May 1950. On examination, a clinical diagnosis of aortic and mitral valvular disease, due to rheumatic pancarditis, was made.
