Abstract

The matrix method introduced by Louck has been extended to calculate the vibrational modes for a finite one-dimensional monatomic lattice with a bases and a finite one-dimensional diatomic lattice. The existence of surface modes in both cases has been investigated. The advantages of using Louck's method have been pointed out and it is shown how this method can be used to calculate the vibrational frequencies of more complicated problems.
