Abstract

An intramolecular geometric outscattering (IMGO) model, developed to extract “atomic” total single electron capture σ 10 cross sections from σ 10 and σ 01 (electron loss) measurements on C-bearing molecules by including intramolecular secondary electron loss processes for projectiles with σ 10 ⋘ σ 01 , was extended to 100–2500 keV H + on C m H n data which reaches projectile velocities where σ 10 ∼ σ 01. Atomic C and H cross sections compare well with theoretical calculations over the entire energy range. Reasonable “atomic” σ 10 values for H, even when it contributed < 1% to the overall cross section, could be obtained from a sufficiently large set of C m H n data. An initial analysis of total electron loss cross sections is also presented.
