Abstract

An apparatus has been developed for the accurate determination of the vapour pressure of a solvent in equilibrium with solutions of a non volatile solute of known composition at constant temperature. In order to check the performance of the apparatus, vapour pressure measurements have been made on the system benzene + biphenyl in the concentration range mole fraction of benzene = 0.92 → 0.72 at 298.1 K. The results indicate that vapour pressures can be determined with an overall accuracy, including uncertainty in composition, of ± 6.5 N m–2.
