Extending the Number Line to Make Connections with Number Theory

Abstract

For many years we team taught a ninth-grade general mathematics class consisting of seventy students. We had to develop teaching methods and materials that were different from those that had not helped our students in the past. As part of our efforts, we developed a specially coded version of a standard number line to furnish representational and concrete experiences for concepts that are too abstract for many students.
