Abstract

Functional Safety requires very low levels of safety risks. Where this is achieved at least partly by the use of a programmable electronic safety-related system, electromagnetic disturbances are a cause of risks so must be taken fully into account in the risk management process. However, it is not practicable to rely solely on the normal immunity tests, at whatever test levels, to demonstrate that such risks will be low enough throughout the lifecycle. Instead, a number of different verification/validation techniques should be applied, including (but not limited to) immunity testing. This paper describes modified immunity test methods that provide verification/validation additional to that provided by standard immunity tests. It is an improved and updated version of a paper originally presented at the 2016 International IEEE EMC Symposium held in Ottawa, Canada.
