Abstract

The data system in the Robert L. Mitchell Technical Center chromatography laboratory was upgraded for improved file management capabilities by incorporating a PC file server to the existing computer hardware in the laboratory. A Tektronix 4105 terminal currently used as the system console was replaced with a Dell 486u50 PC with large SCSI disk and tape drives. This alternative provides for extended years of use of the current system (Concurrent 3203; P.E. Nelson, LIMS-2000 ‘CLAS only’). By using good communications between the two systems, limited disk space on the Concurrent system is freed for additional software. Improved file organization and storage is obtained for all of the files generated in the laboratory, by capitalizing on software benefits of the PC operating system. This file organization provides more access to older files than does simple archiving to tape, which makes the files relatively inaccessible. This upgrade also benefits from much lower pricing for the PC hardware rather than a comparable larger Concurrent computer. A file nomenclature system is described to naturally manage files relative to work flow in the laboratory.
