Abstract

Over the years, relational dialectics theory (RDT) has emerged as a prominent theory in the Communication field. Applied primarily in interpersonal and family contexts, RDT has generated valuable insights into the communicative challenges that characterize relational life. However, despite the impressive body of RDT-informed research, researchers have yet to tap into the theory’s full potential. To fully utilize RDT’s core premises, I argue that communication researchers must take on two research “tasks”: (a) expand their methods of data collection; and (b) respect conceptual complexity. Addressing these tasks will enhance the theory and extend important knowledge about interpersonal and family communication.
