Abstract

Abstract The focus of this chapter is on institutions, through the analysis of agricultural innovation platforms (AIP) as a valuable entry point in conservation agriculture for natural resource management (NRM) at farm level. The rationale is that AIP is a viable approach to multifunctional smallholder agriculture that generates a range of productivity, ecological, economic, social and other benefits necessary for sustainable NRM among smallholders. Three case study AIPs are presented: the Bungoma South Farming Innovation Platform (BUSOFIP) of SIMLESA in western Kenya; the Maize Innovation Platform (MIP) of Nyagatare in northern Rwanda; and the Kieni AIP in central Kenya.
