Abstract

It is shown that an extended form of the orbital vibronic constant (OVC) in Bersuker's study of Jahn-Teller effects is related to the attractive force for superconductivity. “Extended” OVC (EOVC) obeys certain selection rules. A pair of orbitals for which the off-diagonal EOVC is nonzero specifies an electron scattering process through which the attractive force for superconductivity is created. The EOVC is calculated numerically by ab initio quantum chemical methods for a molecular model of polyacetylene. Deformation of the nuclear geometry reduces the orbital energy gap for which the EOVC is nonzero, and enhances the attractive force for superconductivity.
