P. ; Giovanelli, R. ; Burkhead, M. S. Abstract High-sensitivity 21-cm line observations of the M51 system reveal that the two interacting galaxies are embedded in one or more neutral hydrogen 'clouds'. The peripheral gas is characterized by high velocities with respect to NGC 5194 and a disordered velocity field which is opposite the sense of rotation of the galaxy. The neutral hydrogen emission seems to extend in the direction of the faint optical extension noted by Burkhead (1977). The total H I mass of the external gas exceeds 1 billion solar masses and extends over an area of projected diameter of 125 kpc. A clear picture of the phenomenon is beyond the scope of the present observations, but it is suggested that the peculiarities of NGC 5194 itself, as well as the existence of the surrounding gas, may be related to the binary nature of the system.
